What does China's battle against poverty mean for the country?
100 million --By 2020, when China completes its poverty reduction target, 100 million people will no longer be impoverished. The country will for the first time have achieved its target to eliminate extreme poverty. China will meet the poverty eradication target set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations 10 years ahead of schedule.
10 million--From 2013 to 2019, the number of poor people decreased by more than 10 million every year for seven consecutive years. The impoverished population had fallen to 5.51 million by the end of 2019 from 98.99 million in 2012.
As the world's most populous and largest developing country, China has achieved amazing results battling poverty with decades of relentless efforts. Chinese President Xi Jinping said that lifting all of China's poor citizens out of poverty is something that has always been on his mind and to which he devotes much of his work. No one shall be left behind in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.
How did China achieve its goals?
Eight years ago, China started sweeping actions with better-targeted measures to tackle poverty. Five years ago, it launched a battle against poverty and has stepped up its efforts accordingly.
The Chinese-style poverty reduction methods, which encompass a wide range of solutions, such as relocating people from inhospitable areas to places with better economic prospects, supporting local businesses, developing e-commerce programs, and spurring consumption, reflect China's institutional strength and grassroots wisdom.
In a message to the 2017 Global Poverty Reduction and Development forum in Beijing, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said "targeted poverty reduction strategies are the only way to reach those farthest behind and achieve the ambitious targets set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development."
Even today, more than 800 million people worldwide still live in poverty, and they need help. China's poverty-reduction journey may shed some light on the global cause to eradicate poverty, which is the exact reason we are bringing this exhibition to you.
China is willing to share its practices in poverty reduction and work with people of other countries to build a global community with a shared future and make our world a better place.
